There were 2 boreholes inside the building and a well outside that connected to the wells with a horizontal shaft. A one time this was a major source of water for supplying the Northern part of Shardlow Rural District Council. It was supplemented with water from the Derwent Valley Aqueduct. Water was pumped up the hill behind to a reservoir at Drum Hill Later, when Derby Corporation constructed the very large service reservoir also call Drum Hill, the Shardlow RDC one was called Little Drum Hill.
