Stanton Lees Spring (Adit)

The stonework reads:  SOUTH DARLEY 1909 WATER WORKS

Says Russ Boyack: Stanton Lees spring was used as a public water supply until the late 1950's or early 1960's. At the end of its life it only supplied Stanton Lees and Warren Carr area. The water was passed into supply untreated. The rectangular notch shown in this photo was used to measure the amount of water put into supply.
When I started work at SDWB we had to fill in the Spring Book which recorded the depth of water running over either a V notch or Rectangular wire for each spring supply in use or not. This was converted into a flow of water. The Spring Book was completed each week in ink. I was nor allowed to fill in the figures until my figures in ink were of sufficient standard. As an exercise I had to calculate the flow from formulae which was checked against a graph before being entered in the book. Probably the first real calculations I carried out.
When I could drive I went to these springs when the Waterman was not available to measure the depth. It often required a long walk to get to the spring.
Wonder what happened to the Spring Book?
