The best known, and most photographed, was Portal D. This was located just north of Ambergate, and was visible from a convenient lay-by on the A6. The construction railway included a most impressive bridge over the River Derwent. An amazingly good clear up job meant that not a trace of this site is now visible. Until a few years ago, there was a scar on the hillside where younger trees were growing, but even this has now merged into the general woodland.
